The kaleidoscope is the main driver behind this project. The brief was to subdivide a single plot into four separate units. The client of this project was extremely wealthy, so budget was less considered. The first half of the semester focused on developing our own concepts whereby we chose one word that would inform our entire project. "kaleidoscope". The brief also required us to design commercial space for the site, in which I chose a underground recording studio. The site plan orientations were focused around sunlight quality, with balconies that taper light into the central courtyard. At the south end of every unit are light wells to bring light into otherwise naturally dark spaces. The overall structure is CLT highlighted on the ground floor by intersecting slanting columns and floor joists. These intersect, expand and contract as the user walks through the space creating a visual dynamic language. The roof structure is sliced by intersecting narrow skylights forming fragmented shadows that move through the day. The skylights show the kaleidoscopic theme through light which is more subtle in the private spaces. The facade is a charred timber cladding put together in fragmented panels of contrasting angles. Custom steel window boxes extrude the facade increasing textural language. Kaleidoscope reimagines what a conventional home can be, in a world ruled by boxes.
